1961 was the first year for the Pontiac Tempest and they were made until 1970; but were brought back briefly, from 1987 to 1991, as a rebadged Chevy Corsica for our friends in Canada. The 1961 to 1963 Pontiac Tempest had a 4 cylinder. It was a 398 cut in half which was 194.5 cubes. EXACTLY same head for 389 421. It was designed by Smokey Yunick (yes that Smokey!) starting in '58 '59. He also built a few 421 cut in half which were full race engines. They won 24 HR of LeMans in '62 in their class.
